When Stephen Smith decided to diversify his already operational gym and health club, his initial plan was to add a tanning salon and open it for franchising. On April 1996, he opened “Planet Beach” out of an existing tanning salon in New Orleans and the franchise program was created. However, in 2005, Smith had another “moment of inspiration” and decided to expand his tanning salon into a full service spa that provides affordable yet traditional services. He said that it was an opportunity that can help increase the success of his franchise program without sacrificing value and customer satisfaction. Thus, a new business model was made and created for Planet Beach.
Twenty years later, the company has over 200 franchises all over the world and their flagship in New Orleans continues to thrive and serve hundreds of customers on a daily basis.
