9 Things to Know Before Getting a Bikini Wax

For most people, getting a bikini wax is not exactly a fun experience.  It’s especially awkward and embarrassing for those who are getting a bikini wax for the first time. That said, it’s definitely so much better than shaving, and you get smooth skin for up to 4 weeks.

Before you book an appointment with a waxing salon such as Pretty Kitty, here are some important things you need to know:

1. Don’t shave your hair before going to your waxing appointment.

Wax needs long enough hair to be able to do its job. If your pubic hair is too short, it wouldn’t work. Hair should be at least ¼ of an inch in length.

2. Don’t schedule a few days before your period.

Skin tends to be extra sensitive in the days leading up to your period.

3. Exfoliate beforehand.

Take a warm bath and exfoliate before your waxing session in order to soften the pores and remove dead skin cells.

4. Decide on what kind of bikini wax you want.

Salons offer several choices of bikini wax. A regular wax takes only the hair that may be visible on the side of your bikini line. A full bikini wax, on the other hand, removes hair from the pubic region including the ones surrounding the vulva and back. It will keep a triangle on the front area. A Brazilian wax removes all hair from front to back, although you can request to leave a strip of hair in front.

5. Plan what to wear.

First of all, you need to make sure you wear comfortable cotton underwear. After your waxing, your skin will probably get irritated and inflamed. You don’t want it to get worse by wearing ill-fitting or tight clothes.

6. Relax.

This may be easier said than done, especially if it’s your first time. But remember that estheticians have seen it all – you don’t need to be shy or feel awkward about being naked below the waist.

Perhaps knowing what to expect will help you prepare better and feel more relaxed during the actual procedure. Be aware that at times your tech may need you to move into weird positions to get access to all the areas you want to target. Don’t worry, they do this all the time.

7. Expect some pain.

No matter what they say, you will experience some pain if it’s your first time. There’s no such thing as a totally painless bikini wax, and the ones claiming it to be so have been getting waxed for years and are therefore already desensitized already. Remember that waxes work by attaching to hair and it removes the hair at the roots.

8. Any hairs left behind are removed using tweezers.

Bikini hairs that were not removed by the wax are removed by the waxing tech using precise tweezers.

9. Manage post-wax discomfort.

You can soothe post-waxing skin irritation with the help of an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream. You can apply a cool baby wipe to help relieve pain and irritation. Also, to prevent infection and clogged pores, avoid touching your freshly waxed bikini area. Another reason for not touching the area is for the body to reproduce natural oils in the skin.

Experts recommend waiting 4-5 days before exfoliating, as waxing eliminates the top layer of skin, and will need a few days to grow new cells.  Exfoliate with a gentle brush or loofah a couple of times a week.

There are only two places in our body where hair grows where it’s attached to special glands that produce odor: underarms and bikini. By removing the hair, the glands will be unable to produce a certain smell and at the same time keep the area clean.

The beauty of waxing is that by sticking to a schedule or by getting a wax regularly, the hair will grow weaker and more sparse, which means that eventually, you can go a longer time in between waxes. Don’t be afraid to give it a try. Sure, it’s daunting. But with the right waxing specialist, it’ll be well worth it.
