What At-Home Hair Treatment Should I Use?

If you want your hair to look healthy and beautiful, it helps to get a hair treatment regularly. But while hair salons like Hair Cuttery can make things a lot easier for us, it can also get quite expensive. Fortunately there are treatments you can try at home to improve or maintain your hair.

1. Thinning Hair

If you have very fine hair, you can improve it by applying a homemade protein-rich treatment to plump up your tresses. Make a “banana protein smoothie,” using eggs and bananas.

Blend 1 egg yolk and 1 ripe banana, 2 tablespoons of honey, ¼ cup of hair conditioner, and 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Slather all over your hair and scalp and leave for 30 minutes. Afterwards, rinse with cold water.

2. Brittle Hair

If you have brittle hair, the solution is to strengthen the strands. Use egg yolks which are effective in strengthening and nourishing the hair follicles.

Add a few drops of lemon into the yolks and mix. Apply the mixture starting from the roots going to the ends and let it sit for an hour.

3. Messy Curls/Waves

A homemade curl enhancer can help define your waves or curls, and make them look healthier and shiny. Use a concoction of molasses and honey to lock in moisture and treat your curls.

Mix together ½ cup of molasses (if this isn’t available, you can use maple syrup), 3 tablespoons honey, 1/4  cup of olive oil, 2 bananas, ½ cup distilled water, and 2 tbsps of all-purpose flour and 4 tbsps of lemon juice.

Remove any lumps and warm the mixture on a stovetop. Apply onto the hair and let it sit for an hour then rinse thoroughly.

4. Dry/Damaged Hair

Moisturize. Go for an intensive overnight treatment using a tablespoon of warm coconut oil massaged onto damp hair and left overnight. You should wear a shower cap to bed place a towel on your pillow so that you don’t end up with a mess. Shampoo thoroughly the following morning.

5. Itchy Scalp

Soothe and moisturize dry scalp using tea tree oil. Put 3 drops of the oil on a piece of cotton and dab gently onto your scalp. You can also supplement this with Vitamin E. Simply open / break a Vitamin E capsule and apply the liquid onto the scalp. Leave it overnight and rinse the next morning.

6. Limp Hair

You can boost hair volume with laundry starch. Mist the starch to the roots then blow-dry your hair.

7. Dull Hair

Humidity, friction, heat and chemicals can cause dullness in the hair. You can smooth cuticles and clarify the follicles by pouring apple cider vinegar solution ( 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar and ½ cup water) over damp hair. Massage for 5 minutes and then rinse with cold water. Apply conditioner like usual.

8. Frizz and Wisps

Smooth and tame your hair using castor oil. Apply a small amount of castor oil in the affected areas. You can also a finishing serum to tame the fizz if you prefer not to deal with the greasiness of castor oil.

9. Dandruff

Dandruff is caused by the rapid shedding of dead skin cells in the scalp and you can control this using a ginger root scalp spray. Grate ginger root and put half a cup into 2 cups of water. Make it into a tea by boiling the mixture. Add a few drops of lemon juice and oilive oil. Massage onto the scalp, leave for 10 minutes and shampoo thoroughly.

10. Hair Shedding

You need to strengthen the hair follicles in order to stop hair from falling out. Experts suggest trying a mayonnaise-based hair mask 1-2 times per week.
