One-stop shopping convenience for cosmetics, skincare and hair products, professional salon styling tools, fragrances for men and women, and toiletries and bath products is what Ulta Salon, Cosmetics & Fragrance is all about. This chain of retail stores, with headquarters in Bolingbrook, Illinois, has each of its stores equipped with the full services of a professional salon.
Each salon offers haircuts, hair coloring, permanent texture, and facials as well as waxing. A wide range of haircare products are also available in each salon. Private label and branded products are sold by Ulta Salon, with a combination of more than 20,000 of these organized in an open, well-lit store environment, arranged in full-service boutiques and self-service displays.

History of ULTA
Founded by former Osco Drug, Inc. President Richard E. George, Ulta Salon, Cosmetics & Fragrance was incorporated in 1990. Another Osco executive, Terry J. Hanson, became the company’s CEO after George’s tenure. Hanson hired Charles Weber, also formerly from Osco, as CFO in September 1996. Three years later, Lyn Kirby of Sears Circle of Beauty, became the company’s CEO and President while Weber became COO, CFO, and Senior Executive Vice President.
Kirby and Weber ran the company together until the latter left Ulta in 2006 when he was made CEO and Chairman of Rec Room Furniture and Games, Inc. by Staples founder Tom Stemberg. In 2007, Ulta became a publicly traded company on the National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations (NASDAQ) Stock Exchange. The following year, Ulta opened its second distribution center in Phoenix.
Five years ago, Carl Rubin was appointed COO, a Board of Directors member, and President of the company. Rubin is considered one of Chicago’s highest paid executives, earning more than $11.1 million the year he became Ulta’s top guy. As of February last year, the company has 675 fully operational stores scattered across 46 states. A typical Ulta store would be 10,000 square feet with 950 of that dedicated to salon services.

The format of each Ulta store includes a modern, open salon area with eight to ten stations, a concierge desk, and areas for dedicated skin treatments, hair color processing, regular skin treatments, and semi-private shampoo. Besides haircuts, hair coloring, perms, waxing, and facials, Ulta salons have expanded their service lines and now include microdermabrasion, hair extensions, and gel manicures.
Prices for haircuts and styling start at $36. After consultation with a stylist, a customized shampoo with conditioning follows. A blowout completes the service. For Ulta’s Signature haircut and styling, prices start at $46. The procedure is the same as the regular haircut and styling but Redken is used to deep condition your hair to give it strength, moisture, control, color protection, softness or a combination of these five.
Ulta salons have the “Diamond Dusting Blowout,” a full package with shampoo and conditioning plus the “Redken Diamond Oil,” a customized blowout using Redken’s famous conditioning oil that gives hair a five-carat diamond-like shine. The “Bombshell Blowout” is a bouncy and sleek blow dry that comes with a set for strengthening your hair’s wave and to give hair shape and volume as well.
If it is hair treatment that you need, you can get Ulta’s “KeraStraight Intense Boost” that involves using an intense mask on your hair that has been especially formulated for improving hair elasticity, preventing potential hair breakage, and nourishing dehydrated, dry or brittle hair. Or you can try the “Nioxin Scalp Renew Treatment” that gently exfoliates your scalp to eliminate dead cells and brings out new and fresh cells.
